DIY Smart Home Guy creates how-to videos for smart home automation centered around Z-Wave and Zigbee devices. Review videos are generally centered around Hubitat Elevation, SmartThings and Vera. I personally run Hubitat as my primary smart hub, however I do test products on the hubs mentioned. I understand that a home automation hub is not a path for everyone. I chose this path because I am a firm believer is advanced automation and local control.

Pete, I had to leave your live stream early, but in a sub-comment here, I wanted to share more detail on LoRa… YoLink, an American vendor, leverages LoRa technology in their extensive range of smart home devices, offering distinct advantages over other protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth: 1. Range: YoLink’s LoRa-enabled devices provide significantly longer range (up to 10 km), surpassing the shorter ranges of Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. This is ideal for large properties and outdoor applications. 2. Power Consumption: YoLink devices are designed for low power consumption, making them ideal for battery-operated devices that need to operate for long periods. This efficiency outperforms Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth in similar applications. 3. Network Topology: YoLink uses a simple star topology, where devices communicate directly with a central gateway, simplifying network setup and maintenance compared to the mesh topologies of Zigbee and Z-Wave. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth also use star topologies but with different range and power characteristics. 4. Scalability: YoLink’s ecosystem supports thousands of devices within a single network, making it highly scalable for large-scale deployments. This scalability is superior to the hundreds of devices supported by Zigbee and Z-Wave, and the limited capacity of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. 5. Interference and Reliability: YoLink operates in sub-GHz frequency bands, which are less crowded and prone to interference than the 2.4 GHz band used by Zigbee and Bluetooth. This results in more reliable performance, particularly in environments with many competing signals. Z-Wave also uses sub-GHz bands but can vary by region. 6. Data Rate: YoLink devices, leveraging LoRa technology, have low data rates suitable for small, infrequent transmissions. This is in contrast to the moderate rates of Zigbee and Z-Wave, the high rates of Wi-Fi, and the varying rates of Bluetooth. 7. Cost: YoLink offers cost-effective solutions, with lower deployment and maintenance costs due to low power and long range capabilities. Initial gateway costs may be higher, but overall expenses are competitive with or lower than Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth devices are generally low to moderate in cost but don’t offer the same range or scalability as YoLink. Breadth of Smart Home Devices YoLink boasts a comprehensive range of smart home devices, including but not limited to: • Sensors: Door/window sensors, motion sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, water leak sensors. • Smart Plugs and Switches: For controlling various electrical devices and lighting. • Security Devices: Smart locks, cameras, and alarm systems. • Environmental Control: Thermostats and smart irrigation controllers. Ease of Availability YoLink products are readily available through various channels, including major online retailers like Amazon, as well as their own website. This ease of availability ensures that consumers can conveniently purchase and expand their smart home systems. Overall, YoLink’s extensive product lineup, leveraging the advantages of LoRa technology, offers enhanced range, power efficiency, reliability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Combined with the ease of availability, YoLink presents a robust and accessible solution for smart home enthusiasts looking to set up or expand their systems.

Nope. I have tested a few brands, and I learned that SmartWings fails. The battery on the blinds would last two months, sometimes less, before needing to be recharged. So, I purchased the solar panel charger to help with that, but there is still no battery life. And the number of times they lose connection with Apple HomeKit is too many to count. Lutron Serena is the way to go.

This vaccuum is trash. It takes a full day to clean a small apartment due to battery lasting for about one room. You will have to spend a good chunk of that day maintaining it when it needs your help to clean it due to vaccuuming up a few strands of hair that locks the roller or getting it out of a corner it trapped itself in. After that whole day there will be dirt along all the walls where it blew the debris and didn't clean up. If you suck up a strand of hair with the handheld it will trap all the dust in the hepa filter which kills all suction power and force you to manually clean it since the cleaning station can't handle it, which happens all the time. As the robot travels around it will drop off chunks of dust behind it and don't take care of it. Mops are absolutely useless against any stain. You will always have to vaccuum and mop yourself after it is done.

Aqara has been very disappointing lately. FP2 never worked correctly . My motion sensor from Aqara never worked correctly neither. I'm done ... I'm dumping there over priced item that you can get on Alibaba for lower price. Oh yeah Aqara is definitely China...I'm sure this will be the next Tik Tok.
